Application Instructions

Requirements vary for first-time applicants, who have completed the requirements for entrance into the postbaccalaureate programs and have not yet applied to medical school, and re-applicants who have already applied to medical schools in the US and have not been accepted.  Re-applicants must submit a copy of their AMCAS or AACOMAS applications.

Please note that the UC postbaccalaureate programs are committed to serving students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Typically you are considered to be from a disadvantaged background if "from an early age, you resided in a low-income community or experienced enduring family and/or societal hardship that significantly compromised your educational opportunities." Further information is contained in the section of the application on disadvantaged status. If you are uncertain of your status, you are encouraged to apply. If you are not from a disadvantaged background, please be advised there are other postbaccalaureate programs in California and throughout the country that do not focus on students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Consult the AAMC website for a list of programs.

All applicants must be California residents.

The Admissions Committee wants to learn more about you. Please prepare an answer to the essay prompts below. All essays must be entered into the online application portal.

  • Postbaccalaureate Essay: Use the space provided to explain why you would like to participate in a postbaccalaureate program. For your application to be complete, you must have submitted this online application (with all of the required entries filled in), and the following material must have been received by the UC Postbaccalaureate Consortium's central office:

  1. Three Letters of Recommendation - Applicants are required to submit 3 letters of recommendation. One letter must be from a science instructor, one from a community service experience and the third can be from either a professor or employer of your choice. Reapplicants may use two of the letters of recommendations that were submitted for medical school, but the third must specifically address the applicant's suitability for the postbaccalaureate program.
  2. Official transcripts for all college level work, including summer course work. Even if grades at one school are reported on the transcript of another school (as is sometimes done for summer courses), you must submit an official transcript from the school at which the courses were originally taken.

Reapplicants (applicants who have already applied to medical schools in the U.S. and have not been accepted), in addition to submitting all required information in the online application, must submit a copy of their verified AMCAS application (a processed date must appear at the top of the form). A copy of the application can be obtained by printing it at the AMCAS site.

Transcripts should be sent directly from the source to the UC Postbaccalaureate Consortium.  The address for the Consortium is:
